Submission: Human Rights Act for SA

Parliament of South Australia’s Social Development Committee is undertaking an inquiry into the potential for a Human Rights Act for South Australia.

SA Rainbow Advocacy Alliance prepared a submission supporing a Human Rights Act in South Australia on the basis that it may protect the rights of LGBTIQA+ South Australians and address some of the inequalities we face in relation on the basis of our sexuality and gender identity.

Our submission discusses the human rights of LGBTIQA+ communities in relation to:

  • discrimination
  • vilification and hate speech
  • hate crimes
  • historical homosexual convictions
  • conversion practices
  • legal recognition of gender identity
  • access to healthcare
  • rights of people with intersex characteristics
  • LGBTIQA+ incarcerated people
  • right to privacy and reputation
  • intersecting minorities.
