What is Asexuality?

Asexuality is a sexual orientation defined by a lack of sexual attraction to any person of any gender.
Asexual people – also known as “Ace” or “Aces” – may want to and can form many types of intimate relationships, whether those relationships are romantic, platonic, or other forms of attraction and connection.
Asexuality is an umbrella term, and exists on a spectrum. Common terms and identities on the asexual spectrum include:

  • Demisexual: People who only experience sexual attraction once they form a strong emotional connection with another person.
  • Grey-A: People who identify somewhere between sexual and asexual.

Advocate for and with asexual communities

In 2026, 30 asexual South Australians took our pre-election survey. Their top 3 priorities were:

  • Improved access to gender affirming care
  • Ending conversion practices
  • Safer, more inclusive mainstream health and social services

“The vast majority of healthcare providers – from physical to mental health – are not educated about what asexuality means..

I disclosed my sexual history and wasn’t believed. I got told I was lying when I said I haven’t experienced sexual trauma.”
