Register Your 2023 IDAHOBIT Event

IDAHOBIT is the ‘International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexphobia and Transphobia’.

On May 17, 1990 – the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. While we acknowledge this day and advancements in LGBTQIA+ equality, the unfortunate reality is that there’s still work to do.

We know that 75% of LGBTIQA+ young people in Australia will experience harassment because of their identity. This has devastating consequences for the mental health of our LGBTIQA+ young people, with LGBTIQA+ teens experiencing suicidal ideation at a rate more than five times higher than non-LGBTIQA+ people in this age group.

It is not just our youth that experience discrimination, LGBTQIA+ people in Australia still experience disproportionate rates of bullying, harassment and discrimination. Host an IDAHOBIT event in person or online in your workplace or community group to learn more about the discrimination our community still faces and how allies can make active change to support and improve the health and well-being of LGBTIQA+ people.

An IDAHOBIT event can be organised for any group of people:

• Government Departments
• Non-Government Organisations
• Businesses
• Community Groups
• Charities
• Social Groups
• Sporting Groups
• A group of friends

It’s up to you and what would suit your group or organisation.

Thanks to generous funding from The Department of Human Services, SARAA has been able to create the following resources:

• Email headers, posters and social media images of varying types to assist promoting your event. These can be downloaded as PDF’s or JPEG’s on our webpage, below the set of drop down tabs.
• If you register your event with us, we will email you a discussion guide the week before IDAHOBIT.
• If you register your event with us, we will email you a link to the ‘Rainbow Realities II: Listen, Speak Up, Stand Up!’ video that can be viewed during your event. *this link will be emailed on IDAHOBIT eve, 16th May, approximately 9pm.

Here’s some tips to make the event a success:

• Have some fun and encourage people to wear something rainbow or one of the other LGBTIQA+ flag colours.
• Decorate your space, lunchroom or workspace with rainbows.
• Watch the Rainbow Realities II video at the event (a link to the video will be sent to you the night before IDAHOBIT (around 9pm).
• Have a discussion about what LGBTIQA+ discrimination might look and feel like.
• Have a discussion or make plans of action that allies can do to demonstrate positive support for the health and well-being of LGBTIQA+ people. (A discussion guide will be sent to you the week prior to the IDAHOBIT event).
• Consider holding a fundraiser or gold coin donation as part of the event and make a donation to an LGBTIQA+ charity making a difference to people’s lives including SARAA (South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance), Minus 18 (supporting LGBTIQA+ youth) or Drop in Care Spare (LGBTIQA+, neurodivergent, disabled or experienced mental health).

The ‘Rainbow Realities II: Listen, Speak Up, Stand Up!’ video interviews 5 people in SA about the discrimination they have faced being LGBTIQA+ people. It also starts a conversation on ways allies can take active steps to support the LGBTIQA+ community to feel included, valued, happy and healthy.

The Interviewees come from a variety of intersections of our community including Lesbian, Gay, Trans, Non-Binary, Ally, First Nations, Person of Colour, recent experience of harassment and survivor of conversion practices.

The video is 10 minutes long, anyone who registers their event with SARAA will be emailed a link to the video on IDAHOBIT eve, 16th May approximately 9pm. It will also be available to view on our website on IDAHOBIT Day, 17th May.
