State of Pride 2025 offers a comprehensive snapshot of LGBTIQA+ equality in South Australia.
Grounded in lived experience and backed by deep policy analysis and data, State of Pride 2025 highlights key wins and urgent priorities for systemic change, tracking progress towards our communities vision for pride. From healthcare and education to safety and recognition, the report lays bare the gaps that still exist and the opportunities to close them.
South Australia holds a proud legacy, being the first State to decriminalise homosexual acts in 1975. While we reflect on 50 years of progressive reform, the data shows that South Australia has since slipped behind, with LGBTIQA+ South Australians facing rising hate, poorer mental health and lower rates of community belonging.
Now, we have a once in a generation opportunity to continue our legacy as a state of pride. This requires our decision-makers to recommit to the values of equality, dignity, and justice that once set South Australia apart.
Key findings
State of Pride 2025 calls for a whole-of-government investment in South Australia’s LGBTIQA+ communities to tackle rising hate, promote inclusion and build a future where every South Australian can thrive.
The report outlines 24 clear, community-driven recommendations to:
- Protect our safety and equality under the law: Reform anti-discrimination laws, introduce new hate speech laws, close faith-based discrimination loopholes, implement a Human Rights Framework, end conversion practices, improve police responses and invest in specialist legal and violence support services led by and for LGBTIQA+ communities.
- Include and support us in our education systems: Embed LGBTIQA+ inclusion across school curricula, expand educator training in all sectors, and ensure every student has access to comprehensive, age-appropriate relationships and sexuality education.
- Improve our health and wellbeing: Fund LGBTIQA+ community-led health and youth services, embed inclusion across mainstream services, improve access to gender affirming care and legal gender recognition, ban non-consensual medical interventions on intersex people, rebuild sexual health systems, and embed inclusion in sport and physical activity.
- Representation and leadership: Develop a whole-of-government strategy, ensure sustainable funding for LGBTIQA+ organisations, and standardise sex and gender data practices to support accurate identity recognition in all public systems.
