Several SARAA members recently contacted us with concerns about changes that would mandate a label of “donor-conceived status” on a person’s birth certificate, removing their right to decide whether they share their conception story, with who, when and how.
We contacted the Births, Deaths and Marriages who in response have agreed to instead include a notation on the back of the birth certificate stating:
‘DC – Births, Deaths and Marriages holds additional information about this birth. For more information contact Births, Deaths and Marriages on ph: 131 882.’
Births, Deaths and Marriages will also enclose a fact sheet that explains the DC notation means the person is donor-conceived, that information is available on the Donor Conception Register and the details of relevant support services that they can contact.
A great outcome for our members!
