Thank you to all members who came to the consultation we co-hosted with the Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence and LGBTIQA+ communities. 17 people were in attendance and provided a great overview of issues faced by our community relating to domestic, family and sexual violence including:
- misunderstanding and downplaying of same-sex attracted violence
- gendered nature of domestic and family violence campaigns and support services
- discrimination when accessing support from SA Police, domestic and family violence services, and housing providers, particularly for trans and gender diverse communities
- cumulative disadvantage for people who experience multiple disadvantage including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people of colour, people within a disability and older and younger people
- reluctance of some LGBTIQA+ people to access faith-based support services
- concern for LGBTIQA+ young people in family environments, including conversion practices
- increasing hate, violence and harassment of LGBTIQA+ people online, in public and at LGBTIQA+ events and the absence of sufficient hate and vilification laws to protect our communities.
The Royal Commission will reconvene their listening sessions and regional visits in January, and then hold their next Public Hearings in February and March. You can stay up to date with the outcomes of the Royal Commission at https://www.royalcommissiondfsv.sa.gov.au/.
